Process
Because we believe in a truly client-centered, collaborative approach to design, the design process is slightly different for every project we undertake. That said, there are a few benchmarks that seem to be the same no matter what the project or project type. We look at those benchmarks as a series of meetings and design phases:
1. We start every custom design with a Preliminary Client Consultation. It's a chance for us to get to know our clients as well as their goals and desires for the project. Using our extensive New Client Survey as a guide, we discuss everything from the overall feel and style of the project to details like how the client entertains and what special requirements exist for the project. It is also at this meeting that we give each of our clients their unique username and password for the On The Boards Client Login section of our website.
2. During the Schematic Design Meeting we sit down to look at the preliminary plans. These plans include scaled drawings of the site, elevations and floor plans with room layouts and sizes. This is a good opportunity to look at furniture layouts, cabinet placement, etc. By the end of this meeting, we will have defined the size, layout, and appearance of the project.
3. The next meeting is the Design Development Review where we refine the design elements. We finalize the floor plans, elevations, site plans, and exterior and interior materials. We also discuss any special lighting and cabinetry needs. By the end of this meeting, any items affecting the structure of the project will be finalized allowing us to send the project to a licensed structural engineer.
4. After all of that, we prepare the Construction Documents and will have one last design review. These drawings will include everything necessary to build your home including site plans, floor plans, interior and exterior elevations, electrical plans, sections, and detail drawings. It is in this phase that we sit down with our client and their builder to discuss the plans and details for the project.
5. Unlike many design firms, we don't just shake hands with the client, send the plans over to a contractor, and never visit the project again. We follow up with our design clients on a regular basis throughout the construction process. We also offer full Construction Administration and Interior Design Services to create a project that flows seamlessly through the design and construction phases. In the end, our goal is to develop a project that exceeds all of our clients goals and desires in both the final project and the process. To do that, we feel that it is imperative to see the project through long after the design is completed.
